10 Healthy Gifts and Activities for Mother's Day

Although a handwritten note and fresh flowers are a wonderful way to show your mama some appreciation this Mother’s Day, maybe it’s time to shake it up a little! What if we allowed wellness and gift-giving to collide this May and saw our gifts as an encouragement in the direction of wellness? Or maybe the activities that we planned for Mother’s Day could reflect a healthy and active lifestyle!

There are hundreds of ways to show your mama that you love her, and we’ve had a little fun putting together a list of 10 healthy ways that you can do so! Some of these are gifts, and others are activities that you can do as a family. Either way, the following 10 ideas combine health with celebration – a great dynamic if you ask us!

1.   Go to the farmer’s market as a family

The farmer’s market is not only an awesome way to stock up on fresh, organically-grown produce for the week, but it’s also a great family outing! There are always coffee vendors and friendly farmers giving out samples of their homemade cheeses, breads, sauces and beverages. The farmer’s market is a lively atmosphere – especially on a sunny spring morning! See here for locations in the Denver area.

2.   Pack a picnic and go on a hike!

If the weather permits, pack a healthy, light lunch for your family and go for a late-morning hike! Getting out into the sunshine with people that you love will boost serotonin levels and make for a well-spent Mother’s Day. Find the Top 10 Spring Hikes Near Denver here, or let us know if your family has a favorite hike of their own!

3.   Non-toxic Skincare Gift Basket

Many products that women are using today contain carcinogens, toxic chemicals and artificial ingredients that affect hormones, skin and overall health. What if you gave your mom a small gift basket containing products that she could trust were clean and made with ingredients that only benefit her? Cocokind Skincare is a line of beauty and body products that are certified organic, cruelty-free and scented with essential oils. The company has already put together gift baskets with face and body products that your mom could try this year! Another trustworthy bath and beauty line is Beauty Counter, who makes products that ban over 1,500 toxic ingredients that are typically found in our daily sunscreens and moisturizers!

4.   Fitness Membership

Sometimes, it can be hard to find a workout that is enjoyable while also challenging and strengthening. Gifting your mom with a gym, yoga, indoor-cycling or other fitness membership can give her the opportunity to join a community of supporters and movement-enthusiasts, while getting expert guidance through each workout! Maybe your mom would benefit from a Class Pass Membership, which allows her to try all different kinds of workouts throughout the month!

5.   Potted Herbs or Herb Garden

Does your mom love to cook? If she does, chances are she could benefit from a homemade herb garden! Help your mom think of a sunny space in the yard that could house a small herb garden, and then gift her the herbs that she uses most – maybe rosemary, thyme, oregano, basil and cilantro. Talk with her about what the herb garden could look like, and then go together (or as a family) to pick out the herbs at your nearest planters, gardeners or hardware store. Of course, if there isn’t space for an herb garden in the yard, gifting your mom a few potted herbs to keep on her front porch would be wonderful too!

6.   Subscription to a Healthy Magazine

Purchase your mom a 6-month or year-long subscription to Healthy-Living, Clean-Eating or Spirituality & Health magazine. These magazines are full of information about how to cook and live healthier. Plus, it’s fun to get something in the mail each month that is full of new tips, tricks and recipes, and that inspires you to live well!

7.   Mother’s Day 5k

Did you know that Denver has an annual Mother’s Day 5k? This year will mark the 8th anniversary of the race at City Park! Celebrate with your whole family by signing up for the 5k. You can walk, jog or run, and there is a brunch that’s included at the end of the race. Childcare is available, and there is also a kids race! Start Mother’s Day off with some activity under the Colorado sun this year.

8.   Bath & Body Gift Basket

Does your mom like to take baths at the end of a long day? Maybe she would enjoy new bath bombs or salts to spice up her bath time! Pursoma is a company that dedicates their high-quality ‘bath soaks’ to providing you with a luxurious, detoxing bath experience. Pursoma bath soaks include a post-yoga soak, cold + flu comfort, foot soak, fatigue-fighter and more. Gift boxes and sets are also available, and you get 10% off of your first order of 3 or more products!

9.   Cook a healthy dinner together

If your mother happens to be the head-honcho in the kitchen, sometimes it’s nice to let her relax while the rest of the family prepares dinner. However, if she likes the idea of everyone being in the kitchen together, then making dinner as a family might be a wonderful way to celebrate Mother’s Day! Or, allow mom to relax by the windowsill or at the kitchen table while the rest of you cook a healthy meal. Need ideas for what to cook? 10.   Spa Service or Coupon

Sometimes the stresses of life can wear us down. Everyone needs a little spa or self-care day every once and a while – especially moms! This Mother’s Day, consider gifting your mom with a hot stone massage or a full spa day at a spa near home. This will give her the chance to fully relax and take time for herself. Plus, she’ll reap the benefits from a deep-tissue massage or facial for weeks to come!
