You’re not alone if you feel like the best way to show love and respect for someone is by gifting them with something of monetary value. Whether it’s for a birthday, Valentine’s Day or Christmas, many times we rely on material objects to say “I love you,” or “Thank you” for us. There is absolutely nothing wrong with expressing appreciation like this, but we also believe that there is something special and unique about giving a gift that is priceless instead of priced.

Mother’s Day doesn’t have to be celebrated with a fancy brunch or extravagant gifts in order to be considered meaningful. There are so many ways to express gratitude that don’t cost a dime!

This Mother’s Day, consider the following for your Sunday celebration. Each of the following ideas don’t cost a thing and are sure to be incredibly meaningful for the mother(s) in your life.

15 Ways to Celebrate Mother’s Day Without Spending a Dime

  1. Make a homemade card. Not just any old card – we’re talking about something unique and hand-crafted. Get creative! Are you a painter? Or do you enjoy drawing? However you like to creatively express yourself – do so on a card for your mama and include a hand-written message on the inside. This is the kind of gift that will forever be cherished!

  2. Forage wild flowers and make your own bouquet. We realize that not everyone lives in an area with wildflowers and vibrant foliage. Nevertheless, if you do, create a wildflower bouquet and tie it up with string. It’ll be unlike anything that the grocery store or your local florist has, we promise!

  3. Create a homemade coupon book. Include coupons for a night off of dish-duty, a cleaning of the house or bedroom, foot rub, at-home manicure, get-away day or weekend, watch the kids for a solo grocery run, etc. There are so many options here! Use ribbon or string to tie the coupons together and then decorate the outside.

  4. Design a backyard garden. How awesome would it be if this summer your family had the opportunity to harvest fruits and vegetables from your very own backyard? Think about what the garden would look like. What kind of vegetables and fruits would you want to grow? On Mother’s Day, envision the garden together as a family and make a plan for when the weather gets warmer!

  5. Have a park day and either include mom or give her some time alone. Whether mom decides that she wants a little quiet time or to get outdoors, having some fun at the park is enjoyable both for the kids and adults! Plan a picnic, bring a soccer ball along, or grab a blanket to sit and enjoy the sunshine on.

  6. Tackle a house project. Has mom been yearning for the closet shelves to be installed? Or are there pieces of art that need to be hung in different areas of the house? Either tackle a project together as a family or take the time to complete it in honor of mom this Mother’s Day. Everyone appreciates checking things off the to-do list!

  7. Have a family movie night – mom’s choice! Popcorn, a glass of wine, blankets and cozy lighting make for the perfect movie environment. Have an at-home theater experience by letting mom choose the movie, and don’t forget some treats! Did someone say homemade chocolate chip cookies?

  8. Volunteer together. Is there an organization that mom has been wanting to volunteer with? Plan ahead and spend Sunday volunteering together. Or, if volunteering on Mother’s Day isn’t an option, schedule a day in the near future when opportunities are available and help is needed.

  9. Visit free attractions in your city. Is the museum offering free admission on Mother’s Day? Look up free attractions in your city and pick one to either do as a family or couple. There will likely be a bunch of fun options due to the holiday!

  10. Sweat it out. Kick-off Mother’s Day on a healthy note by working out together. If it’s sunny and beautiful outside, go for a long run or walk; or, if mom has been wanting to try out a new workout class – attend it with her! Most fitness studios offer a free first class to new guests.

  11. Camp out in the backyard. Make it a ‘glamping’ experience (glamorous camping) with candles, homemade dinner, plenty of pillows and blankets, Netflix on the laptop, and whatever else will make the night outside a cozy one!

  12. Breakfast in bed. Of course this one had to be included on the list! Let mom enjoy her coffee or tea in bed while you and the kids prepare breakfast. As she’s eating, clean up the kitchen and living space!

  13. Plan a family trip or vacation. You don’t have to book anything on Mother’s Day, but spend some time dreaming up a trip that you both can then look forward to. Do you want to vacation by the beach? Or have you been dreaming about staying in a cabin in the mountains? Start a spreadsheet and include details and potential dates for the trip.

  14. Explore the outdoors. We’re not just talking about an afternoon at the park... Explore hikes or trails near you and pick one to try out on Sunday! If it’s a bit of a drive to the trail, let mom pick the music. Don’t forget to pack water and a snack!

  15. Spend a little time showering mom with words of affirmation. Sometimes, there is nothing more meaningful than verbally telling someone how you feel about them. At some point on Sunday, take time to tell mom why you love her and appreciate her. You can also write these things down on a sheet of paper so she has them to remember!

We are so grateful for all of the wonderful mamas on this planet, and we hope that you have a fun time celebrating them this Sunday! Let us know how you celebrate creatively this year by commenting below or on our social media channels.
